We all go to conferences…or at least it appears like it on my Twitter feed every few weeks. Aside from hashtags and official twitter feeds I haven't seen many really cool ways to incorporate social media into an actual event. So here are the Top 10 things your Conference or Event could be using to incorporate Social Media into your Event:

Crowd Sourcing Questions – In a room of 4,000 people getting your question answered is tough, but not if your question was Tweeted or Facebooked! If you have a good question this would be a killer way to get it asked and answered.

Alert Attendees of Cool Stuff – You could use Twitter and Facebook to do last minute giveaways, meet and greet passes, etc. This could help your event gain traction even during a lunch break.

Sponsored Giveaways – Everyone likes free stuff…what if one of your sponsors could get a hold of your follower/fan list for a giveaway during the event. Check out our friends at Giiv to see if they can help you with this!

Best Seat - Use Social Media to upgrade someone from the back to the front…in a nice big comfy chair of course. (Added bonus…make sure they have a cooler full of drinks and snacks!)

Lost and Found – Sometimes people lose things at conferences…so create a conference specific lost and found twitter account and send tweets about things that are found. (Or have the audience use a lost and found hashtag if they find stuff!)

Late Groups - Invariably some groups coming to your event will be late. Car trouble, traffic jams, etc. Using social media listen to them talk about being late and select one of the groups to get "white glove" treatment when they arrive. Save them enough seats, valet their van, and make sure all of their registration materials are ready to go when they arrive.

Roving Twit-Pics - Send out some people into the crowd and take pics for the official conference twitter feed. Include their Twitter user name in the pic to add some value for the attendee.

T-O-D - Have your social media staff (you do have someone working conference social media right?) select a "T-O-D" (Tweet of the Day) and give that tweeter a prize. It could be insightful, funny, serious, scary…anything…just give them something! (On stage would be even better!)

Backstage Antics - If you have ever been backstage at a conference…some pretty funny things are happening. We have all seen the backstage interviews…but tweeting some candid pics would be AWESOME!

Video Time – Now that everyone at your conference will have an iPhone 4 (I mean really…who doesn't have one yet?) Get them to send in their videos to your uber-talented video team (You have one of those too right?) and have the crowd sourced video for a montage near the end of the event.

Okay…there are 10 things you can do for your conference/event…hurry and do it before someone else does! Can you think of anymore?

Special thanks to Wendy and Maggie! Wendy's Daughter was getting embarrassed at the thought that her friends might see her mom on YouTube, but she was so sweet! And Maggie was worried that she didn't get enough of her makeup done before our interview. (She looks just fine to us!)

The dirty secret is that neither one of the phone platforms in the long run will be better than the other. In the short term one phone will only be better than the other until the deficient phone is upgraded. The general public has spoken: iPhone is the clear winner in public opinion. So…Why does the iPhone seem to draw a bigger response than new Droid phones?

Simply put Apple is a hype machine. It seems relatively old school, but Apple simply hypes everything up. CEO Steve Jobs gives hour long presentations extolling the virtues of each new device as it is released. He describes the painstaking work that went into every little detail of the new device and then used more, and more, and more flowery speech to pump it up.

Just as the press conference room is at a fever pitch he releases them into a room where they get the opportunity to play with the devices and give their readers/viewers a first impression of the device.

Droid doesn't have a singular spokesperson, they don't have big flashy press conferences that are followed by average consumers, and they aren't a big hype machine. It's not that Droid is an inferior phone, it is all in the presentation.

Apple presents their new devices to the world as if these devices are the very thing that the world has been longing for. Droid phones are presented as an alternative to the iPhone if you don't want to be on the at&t network.

Show us what Droid does without mentioning iPhone. Tell us about your developers and the apps you have in your store instead of talking about iPhone. Only then will Droid and iPhone be in the same league for the average consumer.

	What do you think?

The bulky and unattractive eye-wear is considered by many, to be the single greatest barrier to the widespread adoption of 3D technology.

The cutting edge technology powering this new breed of three dimensional display holds the potential to dramatically alter, not only the portable gaming landscape, but the hand held electronics market as well. Devices that use small LCD displays, like cell phones, portable media players and digital cameras are all primed for a three dimensional upgrade.

Despite being the first company to come to market in the U.S. with a device that uses the new 3D tech, Nintendo's singular focus on a relatively minute slice of the overall mobile electronics market may hinder them in the long run.

Current cell phones are more than capable of playing the latest graphic intensive games released today in addition to doing a whole lot more. As smart phones begin to grow as a percentage of all cellphones, consumers will begin to tire of carrying more than one device.

Need Proof?

As big as this news seems, it pales in comparison to the launch of Apple's iPhone 4. Twitter, Facebook, and Blog's all lit up when the phone was announced and as the phone went on sale last week. As the phone launches in real life on Thursday, these outlets will again be consumed with buzz about the new product.

In contrast, Nintendo's announcement wasn't as hyped. Like Apple, Nintendo kept strict control over the release of any information related to the device, attempting to feed into the cycle of hype and widespread speculation running rampant on the gamer blogosphere. Unlike Apple, Nintendo's hand held gaming device doesn't cut across a wide spectrum of consumers. So, while gamers and techies were very hyped, the average consumer may not have even known the announcement was made.

(However, this should be a big seller at Christmas.)

So, is it a device issue or segment issue? I don't know the answer to that, however, I do know that if Nintendo wants to continue growth in the hand held market they should probably partner with a cellular device maker for a future release. Who wouldn't want to watch 3-D movies on their cellphone? Right?

We developed our approach to social media for small businesses several months ago. We love small businesses not only because they are a large part of our client base, but because its easy to do fun stuff with small businesses.

Fortune 500 companies have lawyers and 8 layers of approvals before you can do anything remotely fun and by they time they give it the okay it is usually just a fraction of the fun that you intended. So, while we love working with out larger clients, with social media we usually have a lot more fun with small businesses.

So, it was nice to see someone outside of our circle of clients and friend validate our approach. I ran across an article yesterday really hits the nail on the head with what we try and do with our small business social media clients.

Thanks to Benj, Jason, and our clients for letting us have lots of fun with your brand online! And if you are interested in how we can work with your small business to develop a customized strategy shoot Jason an email.

When the internet and web pages were first being developed, everything seemed to move at the speed of light. New advancements and best practices came at a rapid pace without much oversight or homogeneity. Until 1994, when the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was founded, no web standards existed. Despite their valiant efforts to make a standard that browser vendors would follow, many developers (specially Microsoft) decided they would still do things their own way.

One of the biggest problems that arose from this were tables. Originally, tables were used to display tabular data, which was just fine. Then someone had the idea that since web pages are "grid-like" why couldn't we just use table elements to format them?

This was a monumentally flawed idea, although you couldn't have convinced many people at the time. Immediately things became messy: Files got longer and longer; hierarchical structures were really tough to understand; and if you considered modifying a website's layout you had to change about half the code.

Things limped along for a few years this way until Microsoft (with IE6) had about a 90% share of the browser market in 2002 and 2003. Many developers began to tire of writing tables (remember all of the tr td tr td tr td?) and began to start making sites without tables. They took the W3C elements and began to develop web pages that did not use tables.

Immediately they realized that the number one browser did not have full support of CSS! Microsoft only provided "partial support of CSS level 1, DOM level 1", which provided some problems for developers. In plain language partial support meant that Microsoft kind of introduced some support for something called CSS that we "think" has something to do with websites, but don't blame us if it doesn't work.

So, developers were back to writing table based websites simply because if people couldn't look at them properly, why bother? Some adventurous code heads created some compatible tableless layouts, but this was extremely difficult and required many work arounds. The good news is that two of the world's largest search engines Google and YouTube (owned by Google) have dropped their support of IE6.

With the advent of Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome (which I am using to write this post), Microsoft is rapidly losing market share. Developers everywhere are rejoicing in the news that they can now develop websites that comply with standards easily with tight, clear, and semantically meaningful markup.

If you don't know what this means or you are still clinging to the old tables check out these images:

These lines of code do the same thing, but the shorter one doesn't use tables. Seems like a no brainer to us…but what about you? Do you still love the tables or are you a 3C convert?

(This post was written by Rafael Ponieman from our South American office in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Rafa, as he is known around the eyespeak offices, came to us with a background in application programming and industrial design. After spending some time as a freelance web designer he came to eyespeak. In addition to his specialty in cranking out fast, optimized, and accessible HTML and CSS, he coordinates his own team of developers.)
